Anton Dahbura, co-director of the JHU Institute for Assured Autonomy, presented at the International Conference on Machine Learning Workshop on Formal Verification of Machine Learning in fall 2022. His talk highlighted the concept of undeterminism, and the AI uncertainty principle.

Who will best influence and guide the leaders and governments of the world on standards and regulations for artificial intelligence and autonomous systems? Dr. Cara LaPointe, co-director of the JHU Institute for Assured Autonomy, is leading the research on this very subject and she joined us for GroqDay in March 2022.

As smart devices, cars, homes, offices and cities become more autonomous, leaders across industry, government and the nonprofit sectors are challenged to assure the safety of the technology, build trust among consumers and communities, and defend against cyberattacks. To tackle these challenges, Johns Hopkins University launched the Institute for Assured Autonomy (IAA) in 2019 as a national center of excellence for artificial intelligence and smart autonomous systems. Featuring IAA Co-Director Cara LaPointe, a program manager at Johns Hopkins APL.

Increasingly, people are building technologies to act on their own without human intervention – real autonomy is everywhere and being integrated more into daily life.  The stakes are high to get autonomy right, for everyone across society.  Systems need to be trustworthy, assured, and beneficial to society. But how do we test and validate them for an increasingly complex world?  How can we ensure fair, unbiased algorithms?  We need to envision a world of assured autonomy from a human-centered perspective.  This video documents the current work of the IAA Human-Centered Design team as they explore and design solutions to this human-focused challenge.
