Pillars of the IAA

As a national center of excellence ensuring the safe, secure, reliable, and predictable integration of autonomous systems into society, the IAA focuses on the three pillars of assured autonomy: technology, ecosystem, and ethics and governance. Autonomous systems comprise physical autonomous systems moving throughout the world, as well as virtual autonomous systems operating in a digital environment. People need to be able to trust the autonomous systems in their lives across both domains. These three pillars buttress the goal of assured autonomy in both the physical and virtual domains: that autonomous systems will be trusted to operate as expected, to respond safely to unexpected inputs, to withstand corruption by criminals or adversaries, and to integrate seamlessly into society. While each of these pillars individually represents a crucial area of autonomy, it is research in the convergence of these areas that will bring us closer to assuring the future autonomous world.
