The Institute for Assured Autonomy focuses on three pillars of assured autonomy:
- Foundational AI
- Applications
- Ethics and Governance
Autonomous systems encompass both physical systems moving throughout the world and virtual systems operating in a digital environment. The public needs to be able to trust the autonomous systems in their lives across both domains.
The IAA’s three pillars support the goals of assured autonomy in both the physical and virtual domains by helping to ensure that autonomous systems will:
- Be trusted to operate as expected.
- Respond safely to unexpected inputs.
- Withstand corruption by criminals or adversaries.
- Integrate seamlessly into society.
While each of these pillars represents a crucial area of autonomy, it is the research in the convergence of these areas that will bring us closer to assuring the future autonomous world.
